Louis W. Gropp

Quincy, Louis W. Gropp, age 67, a lifelong Quincy resident, passed away, Thursday, September 14, 2017.

Louis was born in Quincy to the late Louis A. and Doris A. (Smith) Gropp. He was a graduate of Quincy High School, Class of 1968, and later graduated from Ferrum College in 1978.

Louis’ life was full of passion. He cherished his family and friends and was always there to lend a hand. He was a talented tradesman and enjoyed sharing his knowledge and craft with others. He loved to be on the ocean and earned his Captain’s license from the U.S. Coast Guard, manning the waters running between the Boston Harbor Islands for the Department of Conservation and Recreation.

He developed a devotion to music at a young age, watching his sisters dance to the oldies. A reserved man at heart, there was nothing to hide when it came to his love for his Harley. Music followed him around through the sleek chrome speakers on his motorcycle.

Louis was – and will remain – a humble, honest, loving, and dedicated man.

Beloved husband for thirty-five years of Susan (Gibbons) Gropp.

Devoted father of Lauren E. Gleason of Gardner, Jennifer S. Gropp Tupe and her husband Michael of Quincy, and Catherine M. Gropp of Norwood.

Loving grandfather of Christopher and Timothy Bailey, Lily Valentine and Luna Tupe.

Dear brother of Joan Petersen of Florida, Barbara Marrier of New Jersey, Nancy Byrnes of Canton, and Kathleen Mariano of Braintree.

Louis is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and friends.

Visiting Hours will be held at the Sweeney Brothers Home for Funerals, 1 Independence Avenue, Quincy on Tuesday, September 19th from 2-6 p.m. Following the visitation, a reception to celebrate Louis’ life will start at 7 p.m. in the Tirrell Room at the Quincy Lodge of Elks, 254 Quarry Street, Quincy. Relatives and friends are invited to attend.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Louis’ memory may be made to the charity of your choice.

i remember Lou when he joined the combined Wompatuck and Boston Harbor Islands State Parks and I worked with him on various projects over the years. His skill and organized methods created a better workplace for all. Lou was eager to share his knowledge and brought with him a sence of dignity. Lou raised the bar for all of us. Rest in peace Lou and my condolences to his family. Steve Gammon

I remember well Lou's love for Captaining the State Boat around the Boston Harbor Islands. He always had enough stories to fill our day of touring and inspecting the islands. He was a dedicated employee that took his job seriously with just the right a touch of humor. I wish him Fair Winds and Following Seas.

Sue, Jennifer, Catherine and the entire Gropp Family - I am so very sorry for your loss, my heart breaks for all of you. Louie was loved by all that knew him. I will miss, well actually the whole street will miss his helping hand, words of advice, spirited political debates, the familiar sound of the Harley or his truck coming up the street, ALWAYS accompanied by a big wave, huge smile and always stopping for a quick chat to see how you were doing. I will always remember Louie for the laughs he brought us all. I hope that you can all find comfort in those wonderful memories we all have! He will be greatly missed.
