Rita May (McManus) MacDonald
Weymouth, Rita May (McManus) MacDonald, age 96, formerly of Dorchester, died peacefully, Tuesday, June 20, 2017 at the Pope Nursing Home in Weymouth, surrounded by her loving family.
Rita was born in Prince Edward Island, Canada to the late Thomas and Margaret (Cavanaugh) McManus. She was raised and educated in Canada and immigrated to the United States as a young woman, arriving in Boston. She had lived in Weymouth for nine years, previously living in Watertown, Quincy and Dorchester.
She was a homemaker and was dedicated to her family. She was especially proud of her grandchildren and great grandchildren, actively supporting all their activities and accomplishments.
Rita was a talented musician and enjoyed playing the piano and bowling.
She was proud of her Catholic faith and throughout her life attended church regularly.
Beloved wife of the late Ignatius F. MacDonald.
Devoted mother of Mary Ellen Dougan and her husband John R. Dougan, Captain, Quincy Police Dept. of Abington, Kevin MacDonald and his wife Emily of Watertown, Beverly A. Hennessy and her husband Paul of Braintree.
Loving grandmother of Kelly Collins and her husband Christopher of Hanson, Michael Dougan, Quincy Police Dept. and his wife Lisa of Quincy, Jack Hennessy and Elise Hennessy both of Braintree.
Cherished great grandmother of Riley and C.J. Collins, Ryan and Laina Dougan.
One of thirteen siblings, Rita is survived Josephine Doyle and Beatrice Devereaux both of P.E.I. Canada.
She is also survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral from the Sweeney Brothers Home for Funerals, 1 Independence Avenue, Quincy on Monday, June 26th at 9 a.m. Funeral Mass in Sacred Heart Church, 386 Hancock Street, Quincy at 10 o’clock. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Visiting Hours at the funeral home Sunday 2 – 5 p.m. Interment Mount Hope Cemetery, Boston.
