Phyllis M. (McLaughlin) Buttomer

Quincy, Phyllis M. (McLaughlin) Buttomer, age 86, of Quincy, formerly of Mattapan, died Wednesday, October 25, 2017, surrounded by her loving family, at the Massachusetts General Hospital.

Phyllis was born in Boston to the late David L. and M. Phyllis (MacDonald) McLaughlin. She was raised in Mattapan and was a member of the first graduating class of Saint Angela’s Grammar School. She was also a graduate of Saint Patrick’s High School in Roxbury, Class of 1948. She had lived in Quincy for fifty-two years.

She worked in medical records at Granite Medical in Quincy for ten years.

Phyllis was longtime, active member of Saint John the Baptist Parish in Quincy. She was past president of the Saint John’s Women’s Club and served as the church’s activities chairperson for several years. Phyllis was involved with many musical shows and countless other church projects. She was a Girl Scout Leader and received the prestigious Saint Ann’s Medal for her many contributions to scouting. She also was past president of former Quincy Catholic Club.

In the early 1950’s she served in the Women’s Marine Reserves and was a past president of the women’s auxiliary of the former Mattapan American Legion Post #128.

She enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles, the theater and shows. She also enjoyed traveling and was an avid Boston Red Sox fan.

Most of all, the passion in Phyllis’s life was her family. She was dedicated to her late husband, James, her children and especially to her grandchildren and great grandchildren, actively supporting all their activities and celebrating all their accomplishments.

Beloved wife for fifty years of the late James F. Buttomer.

Devoted mother of James F. Buttomer, Jr. and his wife Luanne of Quincy, David P. Buttomer and his wife Robin of Braintree, Linda M. McCulley and her husband Bob of Quincy, Susan Prue and her husband Jim of North Waterboro, Maine, Janet M. Batson of Quincy, Robert S. Buttomer and his wife Christine of Quincy.

Loving grandmother of thirteen grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren.

Dear sister of Pauline A. McLaughlin of West Roxbury and the late Rita M. Jeffries. Phyllis is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Funeral from the Sweeney Brothers Home for Funerals, 1 Independence Avenue, Quincy on Tuesday, October 31st  at 9 a.m. Funeral Mass in Saint John the Baptist Church, 44 School Street, Quincy at 10 o’clock. Relatives and friend are invited to attend. Visiting Hours at the funeral home on Monday from 4 – 8 p.m. Interment Knollwood Memorial Park, Canton.
