Louise C. MacDonald, Esq., age 33

Louise Caitlyn MacDonald, Esq., age 33, of Quincy, died, Wednesday, November 24, 2021 at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, surrounded by her loving family.

Born on December 21, 1987, Louise was raised in New Waterford, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, where she graduated as valedictorian from Breton Education Centre in 2006. Upon her graduation, Louise was awarded the Francis M. McLaughlin Scholarship to attend St. Thomas University (Fredericton, New Brunswick). At St. Thomas, Louise attained Dean’s List honors and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science and Human Rights, with distinction, in 2010. Louise was awarded the Bader International Study Centre Law Scholarship from Queen’s University and went on to obtain a certificate in Public International Law from the Bader International Study Centre (East Sussex, UK) in 2011. Louise received her Juris Doctor from Queen’s University (London, Ontario) in 2013 and was called to the Bar of Ontario in 2015. Louise lived in Toronto, Ontario until February 2021.

Louise was gentle and quiet. She loved literature, art, travel, and theater. Louise travelled extensively throughout the United States and Europe, and to the Caribbean and Japan. She was passionate about helping others and served as a volunteer for Queen’s Legal Aid, as well as Pro Bono Students Canada with HIV/ AIDS Regional Services and the Canadian Civil Liberties Association. Louise belonged to the Washington Center Alumni Community, for serving as a volunteer with Global Centurion in Washington, D.C., on a legal research project researching human trafficking globally and instances of child sexual slavery in Western Europe.

Louise is survived by her loving parents, Allister and Rhoda (Campbell), of New Waterford, Nova Scotia; brother, Michael (Kelly), of Juniper Mountain, Nova Scotia; sister, Breagh (Bryan), of Quincy; and cousin, Mark Morrison, of New Waterford, Nova Scotia, who was more like a little brother to Louise and who she affectionately called “Chi Chi”. Louise will always hold a special place in the hearts of her aunt, godmother, and “second mother”, Ann Morrison, who championed Louise’s care throughout her illness, and her uncle, Bruce Morrison, who was especially close to Louise.

Louise will be sadly missed by many aunts, uncles, and cousins in the United States and Canada. She is survived by her uncles, Collie (Lorraine), Rod “Butch” (Gwen), Francis Ray (Barbara), Malcolm (Anne) Campbell, and Paul MacDonald, and aunts, Carmel (John) Philippakis, Isabelle Faherty, Louise Campbell, Rosemarie “Rosie” Campbell, Donalda (John) Gill, Ann (Bruce) Morrison, Marcia Currie, Lorna MacDonald, Brenda MacDonald and Jeanette Martin. Louise was also especially close to her cousin, Christopher Campbell, who was one of her best friends throughout her life, and her cousin, Laura Campbell, who was Louise’s travel buddy.

Louise was predeceased by her maternal grandparents, Annie Catherine “Baba” and Francis Campbell; paternal grandparents, Mary “Muckie” and Angus “Curly” MacDonald; and uncles, Jackie, Billy, Jimmy, and Parker MacDonald, Pat Faherty, and Jim Currie; and cousin, Gregory MacDonald.

Louise’s family will be forever grateful for the love, care, support, and prayers received from so many throughout Louise’s illness. A special thank you to Louise’s many aunts, who were so special to her, for helping care for her during her illness, and to her cousin, Dr. Maria Currie, who was always available to offer her help from California throughout Louise’s illness. Furthermore, a special thank you to Louise’s many cousins and friends who brightened her days by visiting with her throughout her illness, and for helping out in countless ways over the past few months.

A memorial funeral Mass will be celebrated in Saint John the Baptist Church, 44 School Street, Quincy, on Wednesday, December 1, at 10 a.m. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. A memorial service in New Waterford, Nova Scotia, will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations in Louise’s memory may be made to the charity of your choice.

Tweaky, we will love you forever. We are comforted knowing you are reunited with so much family, and that Baba will hold you in her arms until we meet again.

  • Rhoda, Alistair and Family. I am so sorry to hear about your daughter Louise’s passing. In reading about her young life, I was impressed to see that she accomplished so much and applied what she learned in her work on achieving justice and in helping to improve the lives of so many. This is a huge compliment to you as her parents, also. Teaching our children to be the best they can be, to live well, and to give what they can to improve the lives of others where it is needed, shows that your children embraced the values you modeled and instilled in them. I can’t imagine how heartbreaking it is to lose a child at such an early age, but find comfort in knowing that Louise’s remarkable contribution will live on in the lives of the people who were fortunate to know her. Love, Sharon xo xo
