Paul J. Ricca, age 92

Hingham, Paul J. Ricca, age 92, of Hingham, formerly of Quincy, died peacefully, Friday, January 4, 2019, in the comfort of his loving family.

Paul was born in Quincy to the late Paul F. and Mary (Purpura) Ricca. He was raised in Quincy and was a graduate of the former Sacred Heart High School in Weymouth. Paul had lived in Hingham for ten years and previously all of his life in Quincy.

He was the former Senior Director of the C.E.T.A Program in Quincy and South Coastal area for twenty-one years, retiring in 1993.  Previously, he was an electronic engineer for various companies including the Raytheon Corporation, M.I.T. and Avco. After retirement, Paul helped co-found the Quincy Retiree’s Association and served as vice-president for eight years. As a young man, Paul had worked for the Bethlehem Steel Company at the former Fore River Shipyard in Quincy as an apprentice electrician.

Paul was a proud U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and the Korean War. During World War II, Paul served on the U.S.S. LSM 303, a Landing Ship Medium.  Recalled to active duty for the Korean War, he was a Fire Controlman 3/c aboard a destroyer, the U.S.S. Smalley, DD 565. He received the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre Medal and the WWII Victory Medal.

He was a longtime active parishioner and volunteer at Saint John the Baptist Parish in Quincy.

Paul enjoyed music and played the trumpet.  While serving in the U.S. Navy, he played in the U.S. Navy band in Hawaii. Later, he and his brothers, John and Joseph, formed the “Riccatones” and played at many local venues throughout the greater Boston area.

He enjoyed cooking and was well-known for his Italian dishes and family dinners. Paul was devoted to his family, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Beloved husband for sixty-seven years of Marion M. (Russo) Ricca.

Devoted father of Janice P. Uvanitte and her husband Daniel of Bridgewater, Susan K. Gustin and her husband William of Abington, Donna M. Resten and her husband Paul of Mashpee, Marianne Ricca of Quincy, Paula J. Chambers and her husband Dana of Abington and Michael P. Ricca of South Boston.

Loving grandfather of Eric Smith, Jason Uvanitte, Tara Kosak, Matthew Gustin, Amanda, Joseph and Jeffrey Resten and Emily Chambers. Cherished great grandfather of Paige and Lucille.

Dear brother of John J. Ricca of Braintree and pre-deceased by Sister Mara, SSJ, Sister Paola, SSJ, Angelo W. Ricca and Joseph W. Ricca. Paul is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Funeral from the Sweeney Brothers Home for Funerals, 1 Independence Avenue, Quincy on Friday, January 11th at 9 a.m. Funeral Mass in Saint John the Baptist Church, 44 School Street, Quincy at 10 o’clock. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Visiting Hours at the funeral home on Thursday from 4 – 7 p.m. Interment with Military Honors at Blue Hill Cemetery in Braintree.
