Elva M. (Shand) Cotter, age 102, of Braintree, formerly of Quincy, died peacefully, Thursday, May 29, 2025 at John Scott House, surrounded by her loving family.
Elva was born in Lynn, to the late Gladys (Haskell) and Irving D. Shand. She was raised and educated there. She lived in Braintree for the past eight years, previously in Quincy’s Houghs Neck for most of her life.
Elva worked in the mailroom at Stone & Webster. She also worked at Raytheon’s former Quincy location in CRT lighting manufacturing. In addition, she worked as an assembler at the former Lynn Shoe Factory as well as a laboratory worker at the former Lydia Pinkham’s in Lynn.
Elva was a musician and played the drums. She was known for playing at the former Dutton’s and later Fox and Hound in Quincy. She also played at the former Teel’s Cabin in Abington.
She was a talented artist and enjoyed ceramics and painting.
Beloved wife of the late Maurice J. Cotter.
Devoted mother of Daniel J. Cotter of Weymouth, Caroline J. Chaplain of Quincy, and Jeffrey D. Cotter and his wife Jennifer of Abington. Devoted stepmother of the late Mary Jane Parker and her late husband Darryl.
Loving grandmother of David Cotter and his longtime companion Hannah Sykes; Jayne Renee McGuire and Joy Ashford; James Cotter and Joseph Cotter.
Cherished great grandmother of Hunter Cotter, Chloe Mae Cotter, Kendra McGuire, Rebecca McGuire, Kenneth Mullen, and Lily Ashford.
Sister of Jimmy Shand and predeceased by her sister, Phyllis McAskill, and brothers, Eugene “Buddy” Shand and Richard “Dicky” Shand.
Elva is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and their families.
Memorial Graveside Services will be conducted at Mount Wollaston Cemetery, 20 Sea Street, Quincy, on Friday, June 6, at 12 p.m. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. The burial will take place in the Veterans Section.
