Walter E. Steele, Jr., age 85, a longtime resident of Braintree, died peacefully, Monday, September 1, 2025 at the Brockton VA Hospital, surrounded by his loving family.
Walter was born in Quincy, to the late Sarah (Douglas) and Walter E. Steele. Raised and educated in Quincy, he was a graduate of Quincy High School, Class of 1958. He lived in Braintree for sixty years.
During high school, Walter served in the Naval Air National Guard at the former Weymouth Naval Air Base before enlisting in the U.S. Army after graduation in 1958. He was stationed in Hawaii at Schofield Barracks with the famous 25th Infantry Division, well-known as “Tropic Lightning.” He received the Good Conduct Medal. During his service, Walter attended classes at the University of Honolulu. He was a member of the George H. Mealy American Legion Post #118 in Cohasset. He truly loved his country.
Walter worked in customer service with the former TWA Airlines for twenty-five years.
He was also the owner and operator of Coastal Glass in Weymouth for fifteen years.
Walter enjoyed antiques and history-related subjects. He loved watching the American Pickers show on television. He was an avid outdoorsman, enjoyed riding horses, and was a longtime member of the NRA.

Dear brother of the late Marjorie S. Low.
Cousin of Robert Douglas and his wife Donna of Scituate, Wayne Douglas and his wife Karen of West Bridgewater.
At the request of the family, funeral services are private.
A Celebration of Life reception will be held at the George H. Mealy American Legion Post #118, 98 Summer Street, Cohasset, on Thursday, September 25, from 2 – 6 p.m. Relatives and friends are invited to attend.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Walter’s memory may be made to the Fisher House Foundation, Inc. which provides free lodging to families of hospitalized veterans, at P.O. Box 791598, Baltimore, MD 21279 or donations@fisherhouse.org, or a veterans organization of your choice.
