Eugene J. Lacey, age 94, a longtime resident of Quincy, died peacefully, Saturday, January 24, 2026 in the comfort of his home, surrounded by his loving family.
Eugene was born in Dorchester, to the late Mary P. (Tanner) and Augustine J. Lacey. Raised in Braintree, he was a graduate of the former Sacred High School in Weymouth. He later earned his Associate degree from the former Newbury Junior College. Eugene lived in Quincy for over seventy years.
Eugene was proud to have served in the United States Navy as an Electrician’s Mate Third Class during the Korean conflict. He served aboard the U.S.S. Salem (CA-139) and was stationed in the Mediterranean. He received the National Defense Service Medal and Navy Occupation Service Medal.
He recently participated in Quincy’s celebration of the U.S. Navy’s 250th Birthday and was delighted to cut the ceremonial cake as the oldest present sailor alongside the youngest.
Eugene worked as an installer and repairman for almost forty years, starting with the former New England Telephone and Telegraph Company.
He received the Bronze City of Boston Medal for the heroism he and a co-worker demonstrated helping a family escape a house fire.
Upon retirement, he began to volunteer. He was the museum curator of the former United States Navy Cruiser Sailors Association. Eugene also served as the museum curator for the U.S. Naval Shipbuilding Museum and U.S.S. Salem in Quincy. He assisted in the restoration of the U.S.S. Salem upon its return to Quincy in the 1990s. He was recently honored for his thirty years of service.
He was a member of the Braintree DAV Chapter 29 and belonged to Our Lady of Good Counsel Church. Eugene enjoyed travelling with his late wife, especially taking cruises.

Devoted father of Eugene J. Lacey, Jr. and his wife Deborah of East Bridgewater, Kathleen B. Lacey of Weymouth, Patricia A. Westhaver and her husband John of East Bridgewater, Steven P. Lacey and his wife Jane of Brockton.
Loving grandfather of seven and great grandfather of eleven.
Dear brother of Judith Ouellette, Brendan Lacey, the late Robert Lacey, and the late Carol McCarthy.
Eugene is also survived by many in-laws, nieces, nephews, and their families.
Visiting Hours will be held at the Sweeney Brothers Home for Funerals, 1 Independence Avenue, Quincy, on Wednesday, January 28, from 4 – 7 p.m. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated in Holy Trinity Parish at Our Lady of Good Counsel Church, 227 Sea Street, Quincy, on Thursday, January 29, at 10 a.m. Interment, with military honors, to follow at Mount Wollaston Cemetery.
