Ellen J. “Gabe” (Gabriel) Hanly, age 90, a lifelong resident of Quincy’s Houghs Neck, died peacefully, Thursday, June 18, 2026 in the comfort of her home, surrounded by her loving family.
Gabe was born in Boston, to the late George and Mary J. (Murray) Gabriel. Raised and educated in Quincy, she was a graduate of Quincy High School, Class of 1955. She played basketball for Most Blessed Sacrament Church and softball for Macy Playground Women’s Softball.
Gabe worked for John Hancock Life and South Shore Bank in Quincy but was primarily a devoted homemaker.
Gabe and her late husband, Jake, enjoyed lobstering in the harbor and spending time on the Harbor Islands for cookouts and gatherings with friends. She was a longtime, dedicated volunteer for Harvey’s Saltwater Fishing Club’s veterans fishing outing for over fifty years. She bowled with the Parketts for forty years, did ceramics at E&T Ceramics in Quincy for twenty years, loved cruises to Bermuda, and trips to the Cape Cod Irish Village and Foxwoods.
Wife for sixty-eight years of the late John F. “Jake” Hanly.
Mother of Lynn A. Hanly and her partner Bill Junglen of Ohio, Patricia DeCosta and her husband Rick Cross, and Debby Parrish and her husband Chuck, all of Quincy.
Grandmother of Gina and her husband Glen, Sheena, Angela and her husband Lalo, Tommy and his wife Heather, Benjamin, Tysun, Gabriel, Reese, Quentin, Gino, and Nadia. Great grandmother of Halima.
She was predeceased by her brothers, George Gabriel, and Gerald Gabriel and his wife June. Step sister of Paul Murray and his wife Mary.
Lifelong friend and traveling buddy of Barbara Logan and her late husband Thomas.
A Memorial Funeral Mass will be celebrated in Holy Trinity Parish at Most Blessed Sacrament Church, 1015 Sea Street, Quincy, on Friday, July 17, at 5 p.m. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. In honor of Gabe’s favorite color, you are welcome to wear purple. A Celebration of Life will immediately follow at the Quincy Yacht Club, 1310 Sea Street, Quincy.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Ellen’s memory may be made to Holy Trinity Parish, c/o 227 Sea Street, Quincy, MA 02169.
Gabe wished to acknowledge Dotty Shaw in a very special way, for her love, kindness, and caring manner over the past year.
