Carmen M. (Barrena) Merlo, age 95, of Brockton, died peacefully, Tuesday, September 16, 2025 at Brockton Hospital, surrounded by her loving family.
Carmen was born in Spain, to the late Emilia (Calvo) and Eustaquio Barrena. Raised and educated there, she immigrated to the United States in 1969, arriving in Milton. She lived in Brockton for nearly twenty-five years, previously in Mattapan for twenty years.
She was a dedicated homemaker. Carmen enjoyed gardening, cooking, and sewing.
Most of all, she was devoted to her family, especially her children and grandchildren, actively supporting their many activities and accomplishments. She cherished time spent with them and the lasting memories they created together.
Beloved wife of the late Jose J. Merlo, Sergeant, Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department, Retired.
Devoted mother of Jose E. Merlo, Maria C. Merlo-Sousa and her husband Antonio, all of Brockton.
Loving grandmother of Roberto, Jose Jr., Antonio and his fiancée Amanda, and Cristina.
Dear sister of Teresa Barrena Echeondo and her husband Victor of Spain.
Carmen is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and their families.
Visiting Hours will be held at the Sweeney Brothers Home for Funerals, 1 Independence Avenue, Quincy, on Friday, September 19, from 4 – 7 p.m. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated in Saint Joseph Parish, 153 South Franklin Street, Holbrook, on Saturday, September 20, at 10 a.m. Interment to follow at Blue Hill Cemetery, Braintree.
