He is survived by his sister Natalie Mariano, who he was always so proud of, “The Real Doctor.” Natalie and her wife, Shelley Fenily, are residents of Falmouth.

Beloved son of the late Luigi and Helena (Papile) Mariano.

Carmen leaves behind a brother and sister-in-law, John and Bonnie Fagerlund, and their three beautiful children, Eric Fagerlund and his wife Amy, Justine Fagerlund Corte and her husband David and son Benjamin, and Amy Fagerlund. Carmen also leaves a niece, Kristen Manzer, and was brother-in-law of the late Martha Manzer.

Carmen touched thousands of lives during his long career in education and will be remembered by countless students, student-athletes, co-workers, and friends for his passion, his devotion, and his kindness.

Carmen was a humble man whose strength was in his contagious smile, and brilliant “words.” He never stopped writing, telling his stories to make you laugh, to hear his voice and to share his smile. And, he never stopped sending his “Carmen Notes” and he always remembered your name!

Carmen’s family and friends were like the pillars on his porch; he knew you were there to lean on and to hold him up.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated in Saint Paul’s Church, 147 North Street, Hingham, on Saturday, October 25, at 10 a.m. Interment to follow at Mount Wollaston Cemetery, Quincy. Relatives and friends are invited to attend.

Following the interment services, DeeDee graciously invites everyone to share a hug with her at a Celebration of Life reception at the Fox & Hound Tavern, 123 Sea Street, Quincy. DeeDee loves and cares for everyone who was a part of the life they shared.

  • We had Carmen at Sterling Jr High, we had Carmen at QHS, my kids had Carmen at AWHS. He taught us all so much not just by being the leader that he was but by the way he lived his life and treated all people. Carmen was our wrestling coach at QHS for my years there. I can honestly say I learned more on that wrestling mat to help me navigate life, the tough times, the good times, the wins, the losses and to always move forward. Thank you Carmen and never to be forgotten….Jim Mullarkey

  • Dear DeeDee.

My condolences for the loss of your beloved Carmen. As many others have already said, he was an inspiration to all of us. He taught us the benefits of hard work, dedication, sacrifice, and respect. There have been many times when I’ve been stressed out by work, or life in general. Then I think, “this is nothing compared to two hours in the wrestling room!” and I move on. Carmen has touched the lives of so many people (always in a positive way). I am proud to call him my coach and my friend.

  • One of the most important things that happened in my life was meeting Coach Mariano. I was blessed to have a great father. After him, no single man made a bigger impact on me than Carmen Mariano. Thomas Aquinas says that to love is to “will the good of the other”. That is exactly what Carmen Mariano did with his life. He willed the good of everyone he met. God Bless this very good man.

  • Carmen was the epitome of a wonderful man. His kindness, compassion, goodness, intelligence and humbleness have left a mark in the hearts of many. As a colleague and friend, I will miss him. Rest in the sweetest peace. Well done.

  • I will always remember Carmen at the front of Archie’s greeting everyone with that big smile of his,one of the nicest GENTLEMAN I have ever met ,R.I.P. Carmen, you will be missed

  • Carmen changed my life. When I returned to college after a 30 year hiatus, my dear cousin Donna convinced me to take his algebra class at QC, Plymouth campus. I was skeptical that I could pass the class, but with Carmen’s extraordinary teaching ability, his patience, and and most of all his kindness and concern for each student, I not only passed, but also gained the confidence to continue my education. I never imagined that I would finally achieve a Masters Degree in Nursing, and when I became an educator myself, I tried to emulate Carmen’s approach to teaching to the best of my ability. The long journey to a fulfilling career never would have happened without Carmen’s influence.
I offer my sincere condolences to his wife and family at this sad time. Please know that I have kept him in my heart all these years, and I always will.

  • carmen was a great teacher coach administer who was liked and respected by all of us who knew him! rip i know joe sedgewick will be there to greet him bob

  • Mr., Mariano as I will always remember him built a wrestling program that was based on hard work, discipline, mutual respect for all and structure. The program he started gave us all a great platform for building camaraderie and friendships which was needed to get through intense practices and a long season that required mental and physical toughness. We had to be a family to succeed.

On a more personal note, he gave a 100-pound anxious kid a pathway for achievements. He nurtured and challenged me in unique ways that maximized my potential but more importantly taught and ingrained traits that no doubt got me ready for the much higher stake challenges I had in school and with my career. My deep and sincere condolences Dede and thank you from the bottom of my heart Mr. Mariano.

  • Dee Dee,
I was deeply saddened to hear of Carmen’s passing. I’ll always remember how he brightened the AWHS cafeteria with his warm smile and kind presence. He had a special way of making everyone feel seen and welcome. His visits always brought a little extra light to the day, and his memory will continue to bring that same warmth to our hearts. My thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time.

  • Carmen was the salt of the earth. There is a gentle breeze blowing over all of us. It whispers “ We Miss You” Rest in Peace Mr. Mariano. 🕊️
