George F. McGunagle, Jr., Deputy Chief, Quincy Fire Department, Retired, age 74, of South Weymouth, died peacefully on Friday, July 11, 2025 at home, surrounded by his loving family.
George was born in Quincy, to the late Ruth R. (Howard) and George F. McGunagle, Sr., Captain, Quincy Fire Department, Retired. Raised and educated in Quincy, he was a graduate of Quincy High School. He lived in South Weymouth for fifty years.
George was proud to be from a firefighting family and a member of the Quincy Fire Department. He retired in 2009 after thirty-four years of service.
George enjoyed golfing and traveling. His most memorable times were spent with family and friends at his summer home on Northeast Pond in Lebanon, Maine. He was a skillful jack-of-all-trades, always picking up projects and giving sound advice to anyone in need of a helping hand. He was devoted to his wife, his children, and his grandsons, and quietly celebrated all of their successes.

Devoted father of Melissa Nowell and her husband, Chris, of Lincolnville, Maine, Mark McGunagle and his wife, Michele, of Franklin. Loving grandfather of McKeon “Mickey” and Cole Nowell and Ryan McGunagle.
Dear brother of Mary Riley and her husband, Michael, of Cathedral City, CA, Patricia Ryan Horner and her husband, Scott, of Plymouth, Michael McGunagle, Captain, Q.F.D., Retired, and his wife, Kay, of South Weymouth, Shawn McGunagle and his husband, Larry Dawson, of Palm Springs, CA, Theresa Kelly and her husband, Mark, of South Weymouth, Pamela Campbell and her husband, Stephen, of Middleborough, and the late Kathleen Innello and her surviving husband, Anthony “Tony” Innello, Deputy Chief, Q.F.D., Retired, of Quincy. Brother-in-law of Matthew McKeon and his wife, Bonnie, of Sedona, AZ.
George is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and their families.
He was predeceased by his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Christina McKeon and Matthew “Jerry” McKeon.
Memorial Visiting Hours will be held at the Sweeney Brothers Home for Funerals, 1 Independence Avenue, Quincy, on Friday, July 18, from 4 – 7 p.m. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. A Memorial Funeral Mass will be celebrated in Saint John the Baptist Church, 44 School Street, Quincy, on Saturday, July 19, at 10:30 a.m.
