Gerald M. “Jake” Giacobbe, age 74

Gerald M. “Jake” Giacobbe, age 74, died peacefully, Saturday, September 6, 2025 at South Shore Hospital in Weymouth, surrounded by his loving family, following a courageous battle with cancer.

Jake was born in Quincy on September 1, 1951 where he was raised by his late mother, Esther Marie (Rinaldi) Giacobbe and the late John Bosco. Educated in Quincy schools, he was a graduate of Quincy Vocational Technical High School, Class of 1969. From high school, Jake proudly served in the United States Navy during the Vietnam era. He was a Signal 3/c Petty Officer aboard the aircraft carrier, U.S.S. Intrepid, CV-11. Later he went to Northeastern University and earned a degree in Finance. Jake was a longtime resident of Braintree and lived in his home for 47 years.

Jake began his career as a carpenter before his employment at Polaroid Corporation where he was a Financial Analyst. Jake had 30 years of service with Polaroid and then returned to carpentry, working for the Christian Science of Boston, where he retired in 2017.

Some of Jake’s happiest moments were quiet ones—sitting by the fire with his wife of 54 years, listening to music and dancing to their favorite song or going for a car ride to watch the sunset and soak in the warmth of a life well lived. He adored his grandchildren and was known as “Bumpa” to many. He could always be found on the sidelines, cheering them on at all their games with pride in his eyes and usually arriving before the team, dressed in that town’s colors. Jake’s presence at every Holiday brought warmth and happiness to every gathering, whether it was proudly hanging his American Flag every 4th of July or reprising his role as “Bumpa Claus” each Christmas.

Jake also cherished the simple pleasures of life, especially golfing. He was a member of the Senior League at the Braintree Municipal Golf Course where he made many friendships and even co-founded the cribbage club to stay connected with his golfing friends throughout the winter months. He also loved every opportunity to golf with his grandsons and family. He was a longtime member of the Adams Heights Men’s Club and the Quincy Bocce Club. He was a handyman who could fix anything and was depended on by so many. He taught us the importance of showing up for each other, savoring small moments, and never missing a chance to tell those he loved just how much they meant to him. His unwavering love and big heart will be remembered by all who knew him.

Jake leaves behind his beloved wife Maureen (Mulvaney) Giacobbe, devoted father to Michelle M. Gaffney and her husband Brian of Braintree, Lisa K. Augusta and her husband Bruce of Abington, Kristin E. Khouri and her husband Damon of Hanover. Cherished Bumpa of Colin and Andrew Gaffney, Colby, Lindsay, Emily, and Brady Augusta, Ava and Vera Khouri. Loving brother of Ronald Giacobbe and his wife Grace of Florida and also survived by many special Mulvaney in-laws, nieces, nephews, and their families.

Visiting Hours will be held at the Sweeney Brothers Home for Funerals, 1 Independence Avenue, Quincy, on Friday, September 12, from 4 – 7 p.m. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated in Saint Francis of Assisi Church, 856 Washington Street, Braintree, on Saturday, September 13, at 10 a.m. Interment, with military honors, to follow at Fairmount Cemetery, Weymouth.

For those who wish, donations in Jake’s memory may be made to the charity of your choice.

  • It was less than a year that you came to celebrate Matt and Wendy’s wedding. You will be greatly missed, may you rest in peace . We will all miss you and please watch over all of us

  • If ever there was ever a person who believed in faith, family, and friends Jake was the superstar of it all. He had a warm and loving way about him that you can see through his beautiful family. He raised three outstanding daughters and was fortunate to marry an amazing woman. I feel so honored to have been apart of his life. He will be missed endlessly.

  • Simply put, I loved Jake! As I love the entire family, especially Maureen and the girls May God look over us all with the same grace and dignity.

  • Aunt Maureen, Michelle, Lisa, and Kristin
Uncle Jake was truly one of a kind with the biggest heart and ALWAYS had the biggest smile on his face. Some of my favorite memories of him are the many family events we had like Christmas at Nana and Papa’s, celebrating his birthday on a family camping trip up at Totem Pole, and how he always called me “Heather B.” I cannot imagine the loss you are feeling but I know you have so many special incredible memories of Uncle Jake. Those cherished memories will live on forever in your hearts. I have no doubt he is now your guardian angel and will always be watching over all of you. I love you all and am so sorry for your loss.

  • Jake was one of those guys you wished you could be like, whether it was playing golf, playing cribbage, or just having a cold drink in the clubhouse with the guys after a round of golf on Wednesday mornings. Quiet, unassuming, friendly, and well liked by everyone he came in contact with. I will miss playing golf and cribbage with Jake, but most of all I will miss his smiling demeanor. My condolences go out to Jake’s family and the friends he leaves behind, RIP Jake

  • Thought I knew you but come to find out just how modest of a person you were because of all of your great accomplishments, miss & remember you always !!   BMGA !!  Paul Deady

  • We have lived in our house behind Jake and Maureen for 13 years. We like them, have gone through so many stages of our adult lives, marriage, the birth of our 3 kids, etc as neighbors.
Through it all Jake and Maureen were witness to our lives as we were to tiny glimpses of theirs. They would be laughing, listening to music and enjoying life by their fire.

Jake was always so kind and friendly whether it was sparking up a conversation with our 9 yr old or entertaining our inquisitive 6 yr old son answering all 100 questions he may have about Jake’s beautifully kept yard or the last seen fox sighting in our neighborhood. He was kind and patient with them always smiling and enjoying the brief moments.

My husband looked forward to seeing Jake in the yard and chatting. After reading this obit I didn’t realize how much they actually had in common golfing and cribbage etc.

Jake loved talking about his daughters and grandchildren and family. He spoke with pride and love.

We will miss seeing him at the top of our hill with his kind, warm smile.

  • I didn’t have the privilege of knowing Jake, but I know Maureen and Michelle, and it was evident that you were all part of a beautiful, loving family.. Looking at photos of Jake, it just seems that there is love and kindness in his eyes.
My heart goes out to you all.❤️
