Janet M. Doherty, age 81

Janet M. (Lawson) Doherty, age 81, of Weymouth, formerly of Hanover and Plymouth, died peacefully, Friday, January 9, 2026 at the Pat Roche Hospice Home in Hingham, surrounded by her loving family.

Beloved wife for fifty-eight years of John A. “Jack” Doherty. The best of friends, theirs was a story of a lifetime of true love.

Devoted mother of her son John B. Doherty and his wife Susan of Lakeville, and her daughter Jan M. Hutton of Hanover.

Affectionately known as “Lala”, Janet was loving grandmother to Sarah and Claire Doherty, Ava and David Hutton.

Janet was born in Boston, to the late Benton M. and Mary L. (Connors) Lawson. Raised in Dorchester, she was a graduate of Fontbonne Academy in Milton, Class of 1962, and the Catherine Labouré School of Nursing in 1965. She lived in Weymouth for two years, previously in Hanover for five years, and earlier in Plymouth for more than forty years.

Janet began her career as a registered nurse working at the former Carney Hospital in Dorchester for several years. After raising her children, Janet earned her real estate license and was employed with Belsito & Associates in Plymouth. She was a well-known realtor, making many friendships over her thirty-two years of distinguished service.

Janet enjoyed taking trips to Ireland, first with Jack and later with their children, creating lifelong memories.

A devout Catholic, her faith guided Janet through her life. She would warmly welcome you into her beautiful home with a smile and a cup of tea. Most of all, Janet was devoted to her family, especially her cherished grandchildren. She found joy in playing quiet games with them, supported their many activities, took pride in their accomplishments and shaped their lives in ways that will never be forgotten.

A Memorial Funeral Mass will be celebrated in Our Lady Queen of Peace Parish at Sacred Heart Church, 72 Washington Street, Weymouth, on Saturday, January 31, at 11 a.m. Relatives and friends are invited to attend.

For those who wish, donations in Janet’s memory may be made to the charity of your choice.

  • I alway thought of Jan as a gentle classy woman who was kind to everyone.

  • Janet will forever have a special place in my heart. She is my dearest friend’s mom, and knowing her since I was 7 years old, I would often call her mom too. I spent a lot of time in the Doherty home and it was such a wonderful example of what a home should be. Janet always had such a soft, calm manner, and showed me an abundance of support, patience, kindness, and love over the 43 years of knowing her. You will be missed, but I will forever love and cherish the many, many beautiful memories of you, Mom. Rest in eternal peace. Love always ❤️
