Lawrence J. “Larry” Fitzgerald, age 76

Lawrence J. “Larry” Fitzgerald, Sergeant, Brookline Police Department, Retired, age 76, of Westwood, formerly of Newton and Quincy, died peacefully, Monday, August 12, 2024 in the comfort of his home, surrounded by his loving family.

Lawrence was born in Quincy, to the late John J. and Anne M. (Maloney) Fitzgerald. Raised in Quincy, he was a graduate of Archbishop Williams High School, Class of 1965, and later graduated from Curry College with a Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice. He lived in Westwood for over thirty years, previously in Newton for several years, and earlier in Quincy.

Larry was proud to have served in the United States Army during the Vietnam conflict. He achieved the rank of Sergeant and was stationed in Germany with the 3rd Military Police Co., 3rd Infantry Division. He received the Good Conduct Medal.

He was employed as a police officer with the Town of Brookline, retiring as a Sergeant in 2009, after over thirty years of service.

Larry was devoted to his family and friends, and especially to his loving dog, Benny the Beagle.

Beloved husband for forty-six years of Jane Talbot Fitzgerald.

Devoted father of John Patrick Fitzgerald and his wife Sofia of Clinton Corners, N.Y., Mary Celine Fitzgerald and her fiancé Seth Adams of South Portland, Maine.

Loving grandfather of Santiago Thomas Fitzgerald.

The last of four siblings, Larry was predeceased by John J. Fitzgerald, Jr., Ellen M. Bowling, and David M. Fitzgerald. He is also survived by several nieces, nephews, and their families.

Committal services, with military honors, will take place at the Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne, on Wednesday, August 21, promptly at 1:45 p.m. Relatives and friends are invited to attend.

A celebration of Larry’s life will be held at Beacons Restaurant, 85 Providence Highway, East Walpole, on Thursday, August 22, from 12 – 3 p.m.
