Marc F. Gearin, age 62

Marc F. Gearin, age 62, a longtime resident of Boston, passed away peacefully, Monday, September 8, 2025 in the comfort of his loving wife, Masako, and dear friends, after a hard-fought battle against cancer.

Marc was born in Ware, and grew up in Spencer. He graduated from Saint John’s High School in 1981, and earned a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from Connecticut College in 1985, before going on to receive a Master of Business Administration from the Sawyer Business School at Suffolk University in 1994.

Marc was a well-respected member of Boston’s finance community. His long and successful career in Private Banking included leadership positions with leading banks and lending institutions such as Boston Five Cents Savings Bank, Boston Private Bank, GuardHill Financial, Wells Fargo, BNY Mellon Wealth Management, Cambridge Trust Company, PNC and M&T Bank. He leaves a professional legacy of the many individuals that he helped enter the industry; his mentorship was instrumental in shaping so many young careers – and he was prolific in maintaining those relationships for decades. He will be remembered for the generosity with which he shared his time, talent and support.

Marc excelled at racket sports and developed a love of both tennis and pickleball. He was a long-time member of the Longwood Cricket Club, where he forged many close friendships, on and off the courts. He was an avid fan of professional tennis, traveling with his tennis friends to see many matches at the US Open, Wimbledon, including trips to Switzerland to attend Roy Emerson’s renowned Tennis Weeks at the Gstaad Palace.

He and his wife, Masako, enjoyed spending quiet weekends away from the city in North Conway, New Hampshire. Affectionately dubbed “The Crib,” Marc’s New Hampshire home was truly his happy place, where he enjoyed pickleball with friends, grilling steaks on the back deck and evenings spent around the fire pit.

Marc’s caring and concern for others was a true gift to those who knew him, but it was his quick wit and boundless good humor…his ability to light up a room with laughter…that made the moments spent with him so joy-filled. Marc was humble in spirit, yet boundless in his generosity, kindness and support for those around him. He will live on in some of the happiest memories held dearly by so many friends and colleagues.

Marc was a devoted husband to Masako Nakamura, who he met in college. Marc and Masako, or M&M to their friends, were together for over forty years and married for the last twenty-five. He was the loving son of Beverly A. (LaVallee) Nelson and the late William F. Gearin, and is survived by his siblings: Laureen Gearin, Timothy Gearin and his wife Jacqueline, and sister Jacalyn Gearin. He was a dear brother-in-law of Keiko Nakamura and her husband Wayne Yasutomi, and a beloved uncle of Kaitlin and Tyler Gearin, Kai and Riku Yasutomi.

At Marc’s request, there will be no services. Several groups of friends and colleagues are planning small gatherings in several states to celebrate him with stories and comradery, for which the family is grateful.

For those who wish, donations in Marc’s memory may be made to Jen’s Friends Cancer Foundation, P.O. Box 1842, North Conway, NH 03860 or by visiting www.jensfriends.org. Near to Marc’s heart, Jen’s Friends provides important medical resources to patients in need in rural New Hampshire.

  • Marc was one of my longest friends in Boston when we met in 1990.
We had many laughs, real heart to heart conversations and conducted many business transactions over the years. He was one of my best friends. I wish I knew the last time we had dinner this year was our last. Kind soul kind heart great human being that I will miss dearly. Marc I know your up there looking down saying our favorite thing- just a smidge- or just a touch- forever our inside joke 💔💔

  • Marc has left me with many fun filled memories. He was a professional man with a keen sense of humor and loyalty to friends. My memory of Marc is sitting outside at a private residence on Newbury Street sipping champagne and eating bananas flambé. He knew how to work and play and combine both. I was lucky to have known him for years and spend wonderful times with him. His memory is large within my heart. Gerry
