Marguerite M. “Rita” Egan, age 95

Marguerite M. “Rita” Egan, age 95, of Quincy, formerly of Dorchester, South Boston, and Belmont, died peacefully, Tuesday, March 4, 2025 at Grove Manor Estates in Braintree.

Rita was born in Ballintemple, County Cork, Ireland, to the late William M. and Honora T. (Daly) Egan, and moved to South Boston at the age of one when her family immigrated to the United States. She was raised and educated in Boston.

Rita was a forty-year employee of the former New England Telephone Company. She began as a switchboard operator and was promoted to Chief Service Advisor. Rita enjoyed leading training sessions for various companies, teaching employees how to utilize their new phone systems.

A woman of strong faith, Rita was a parishioner at Saint Ann Parish in the Neponset area of Dorchester where she lived the majority of her life and previously the Gate of Heaven Church where she continued her support long after leaving South Boston. She was a true philanthropist with churches and Catholic schools being a primary beneficiary of her generosity.

Rita’s legacy includes having been a volunteer mentor at the “T.E.S.T.” organization for young women in Boston who had dropped out of school and were in need of assistance to learn the skills to be ready to enter the workforce.

Rita traveled extensively throughout her life, often with her brother, Bill, in tow. She enjoyed visits to Haiti, Ireland, England, Puerto Rico, Germany, and Florida. Rita was an incredibly creative artist and writer who loved to pen letters to family in Ireland who she remained in contact with throughout her life, maintaining the family’s connection to their Irish roots and relatives. Rita will also be remembered for her knack for telling a great story, her quick wit, and her giving nature.

The last of nine siblings, she was predeceased by Eileen, Daniel, Nora, Elizabeth Fritz, William, Mary Theresa, John, and Francis X. Egan. Rita is survived by her nephew, Daniel Egan; her nieces, Kathleen and Susan Egan and their families.

A Memorial Funeral Mass will be celebrated in Saint Agatha Church, 432 Adams Street, East Milton, on Saturday, March 15, at 10:30 a.m. Relatives and friends are invited to attend.

Given Rita’s passion for helping women in need of transition to the world of work, for those who wish, donations in Rita’s memory may be made to “Dress for Success Boston” https://boston.dressforsuccess.org/get-involved/donate/.
