Mary E. (Barrett) Mullen, age 89, a former longtime resident of Hingham, died peacefully, Wednesday, June 4, 2025 at the Pat Roche Hospice Home in Hingham, surrounded by her loving family.
Mary was born in Salem, to the late Francis and Florence (Carney) Barrett. She was raised in Quincy, and was a proud graduate of the first graduating class of Archbishop Williams High School, Class of 1953. A graduate of Katharine Gibbs, she was a former secretary in the Leather District in Boston.
Mary met Fran at the local A&P Grocery Store in Quincy, fell in love, married and moved to Hingham to raise their family.
Mary was a dedicated wife and mother who supported her children in school, sports, and hobbies. She was devoted to her husband and encouraged him in his career. Mary lovingly cared for Fran with tremendous tenderness until he passed away in 2018.
Mary enjoyed spending time with her family, watching movies, reading a good mystery, trying out new recipes, and working in her garden.
Although she herself shied away from compliments, Mary had a talent for remembering names and people and making each one feel special.
Beloved wife for fifty-nine years of the late Francis E. Mullen, Chief, Quincy Police Department, Retired.
Devoted mother of Elizabeth Holland of Reading and her late husband Stephen, Michael Mullen and his wife Carole of Marshfield, the late Gregory Mullen and his surviving wife Paula of Franklin.
Loving grandmother of seven and great grandmother of two.
The last of four siblings, she was predeceased by Francis Barrett and his late wife Emily, Arthur Barrett and his late wife Marjorie, Peter Barrett and his surviving wife Patricia of Banning, Calif.
Mary is also survived by many wonderful nieces and nephews.
At the request of the family, funeral services and interment were private.
