Maurice J. “Moe” Foley, age 85
of Braintree
Maurice J. “Moe” Foley, age 85, a longtime resident of Braintree, formerly of Quincy, died peacefully, Wednesday, November 5, 2025 at his son’s home, surrounded by his loving family, after a brief battle with pancreatic cancer.
Maurice, affectionately known as Mossy as a boy, was born in 1940 in Tralee, County Kerry, Ireland, to the late Thomas and Margaret (O’Grady) Foley. He was always second or third in his class in the Christian Brothers School. Even though he grew up in a house with no indoor plumbing, he was proud that his parents never let him or his six siblings go hungry.
The youngest of seven, he left school at the age of thirteen to work with his crippled father in construction. He was the last to leave home at the age of seventeen, when he went to London where he lived with his brother, Michael, and sister, Kate. He stayed there for ten years, working as a laborer and floor layer.
In 1968, he proudly immigrated to the United States of America, landing in Boston. He met his wife, Annie, at Broadway Station in South Boston and they married in 1970. They settled in a newly acquired three-family on Holmes Street in Quincy.
Their first son, Thomas, was born in 1971, followed by Michael in 1972, and Paul in 1978.
In 1975, he bought the Car Stop Café, a bar on West Broadway in South Boston, and became a publican. In 1981, he became the owner of what would become Delaney’s Pub on Franklin Street in Quincy. In 1982, the family moved to Addison Street in Braintree.
Moe ran Delaney’s Pub for decades, becoming a fixture in the Irish immigrant community. After nearly forty years, he retired and sold the pub in 2019.
Moe was always quick with a joke or a kind word and was always generous when someone needed help of any kind. He could often be found at the bar, pipe in hand, playing cards or breaking out in song, usually Sinatra. He adored western movies and Gunsmoke.
Beloved husband of the late Annie M. (McDonnell) Foley.
Devoted father of Thomas Foley, former Deputy Sheriff, Norfolk County Sheriff’s Office, Michael Foley, Q.P.D. and his wife Jennifer, and Paul Foley, Q.P.D., Ret.
Loving grandfather of Aaleeah, Ashton, Patrick, Bridget, Colin, and Ryan.
Moe was the youngest and last surviving sibling in his family of Thomas, Michael, Sean, Patrick, Kate and Dennis.
Visiting Hours will be held at the Sweeney Brothers Home for Funerals, 1 Independence Avenue, Quincy, on Sunday, November 9, from 2 – 5 p.m. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Funeral Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Monday, November 10, at 10 a.m. Interment to follow at Blue Hill Cemetery, Braintree.
