Norma E. Baratelli, age 95, a lifelong resident of Quincy, died peacefully, Tuesday, August 27, 2024 in the comfort of her home, surrounded by family and friends.
Norma was born and raised in Quincy, and was a graduate of Quincy High School, Class of 1949. She attended the former Quincy City Hospital School of Nursing and later graduated from Northeastern University.
She was a registered nurse and during the early stages of her career worked with polio patients. Norma worked for various hospitals including Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston Women’s Hospital, Longwood Hospital, and the former Quincy City Hospital. In 1956, she provided nursing care for victims of the SS Andrea Doria sinking.
Norma was a woman of great faith and was a lifelong active member of Saint John the Baptist Church in Quincy where she made many lasting friendships.
She loved to travel throughout the United States and many countries in Europe. In 1960, while visiting friends in Germany, she proudly attended the Eucharistic Congress.
She was an avid Boston Red Sox fan and loved animals. She was especially dedicated to her beloved pet dog, Vera, who lived to the age of eighteen. They enjoyed walking through Faxon Park in Quincy and were members of the “Faxon Park Group”.
Norma was always in support of veterans’ causes and as an accomplished accordionist, with her late sister Betty playing the violin, enjoyed entertaining various veterans’ groups for many years.
Norma was the last of three siblings and was predeceased by Elizbeth J. “Betty” Powers and her husband Paul, Angela Coffey and her husband Thomas.
She was the cousin of Brent Maynard and dear longtime friend of Mary C. Bythrow and her family.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated in Saint John the Baptist Church, 44 School Street, Quincy, on Tuesday, September 3, at 11 a.m. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Visitation at the church prior to the Mass from 9:45 – 10:45 a.m. Interment to follow at Pine Hill Cemetery, West Quincy.
