Edward was born in Boston, to the late Edward H. and Gertrude “Dotty” (Webster) Cochrane. Raised and educated in South Boston, he was a graduate of Boston Technical High School, Class of 1960. He lived in Quincy for sixty years, previously in South Boston. Ed and his late wife, Elaine, enjoyed many winters in Marco Island, Fla. where they made many friendships.

As a young man, he began his career at Boston Gear Works before joining the New England Telephone Company for many years where he maintained a close-knit group of friends. He worked in many capacities but retired in 2005 from Avaya as a Tier 3 field engineer, and had traveled throughout the country as a trouble shooter working on problems that could not be fixed locally. After retiring, Ed worked part time for thirteen years at the Wollaston Golf Club in Milton.

In 2022, after the passing of his son, Ed, he took over ownership of the popular Rags Tavern and Alumni Pizza in Quincy Point. Ed was a longtime active member of the Quincy Lodge of Elks.

Ed enjoyed travelling and was proud to have visited the fifty states over the course of his life. He enjoyed golfing, was an avid Boston sports fan, and loved all his family’s many dogs and spending time with his friends.

Most of all, Ed was devoted to his family, his grandchildren, and most especially, his great grandson, Cole, with whom he had a special relationship. Ed relished attending all of Cole’s sporting events.

Beloved husband for fifty-five years of the late Elaine (Keefe) Cochrane.

Devoted father of Thomas J. Cochrane of Quincy, Judi Borowski and her husband Kevin of Warwick, R.I., the late Edward T. Cochrane, and the late James M. “Jamie” Cochrane, Quincy Police Department and his late wife Maria.

Loving grandfather of Corinna, Jack, Rekelle, and Joseph. He was also grandfather of the late twins, Mia and Caroline. Cherished great grandfather of Cole.

One of four siblings, he was the dear brother of Roberta Kinsella of Scituate and her late husband Edward, and was predeceased by Peter and Mary Cochrane.

Brother-in-law of Thomas P. Keefe and his wife Arlan of Niantic, Conn., and the late Marie Hartnett and her surviving husband Ted of Quincy. Ed is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and their families.

  • Farewell my friend, I can remember when we first met in high school sixty plus years ago.
I was the captain of the Tech patrol and you were one of the reps who guarded the exit doors at lunch, making sure no one went outside for a smoke. There were rumors you were letting the smokers outside for a fee. I never believed it.
I used to get a big kick out of every time we met you would greet me with “Captain my Captain”
God bless you and your family, may you rest in peace.
Farewell my friend until we meet again in the afterlife.

  • I had many many great conversations with Eddy at the Fowler House when he and Teddy would venture out. Always impressed with how friendly he was. Same when I ran into him in Florida, just simply a class act.
