Edward J. “Teddy” Hartnett III, age 79, of Quincy, died peacefully, Sunday, February 23, 2025 at Tufts Medical Center in Boston, in the comfort of his loving family.

Teddy was born in Chelsea, to the late Mary Louise (McLaughlin) and Edward J. “Mickey” Hartnett, Jr. Raised and educated in Charlestown, he was a graduate of Boston English High School, Class of 1963.

He lived in Quincy for the past fifty years, spending most of those years in Quincy Point. He loved the City of Presidents and enjoyed attending community events and supporting veterans and first responders.

Teddy proudly served in the Army National Guard of Massachusetts.

He was employed with the Charles Stark Draper Laboratory in Cambridge for forty-five years. He began his career in the mailroom and worked in various capacities before becoming administrator of the reprographics department. He retired in 2008. Following his retirement, Teddy worked as a resource officer at Quincy College, a shuttle driver at the Adams Inn, and a poll worker for the City of Quincy Elections Department.

He was a longtime member of the Quincy Lodge of Elks, where he made many friendships. Teddy was a Boston sports fan. An avid bowler, he belonged to several bowling leagues and over the years, took on the role of president and treasurer.

Teddy enjoyed live Irish music and fun times with family and friends at McKay’s, Rags Tavern, Sly Fox Tavern, Cronin’s Publick House, the Hofbrau, the Eire Pub, and Mia Regazza.

Most of all, Teddy was devoted to his family, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren, supporting all their many activities and accomplishments.

Beloved husband of the late Marie (Keefe) Hartnett.

Devoted father of Edward J. “E.J.” Hartnett IV, Quincy Police Department of Quincy, Dawn M. Kelly and her husband Robert of East Bridgewater, and Gregg T. Hartnett, Quincy Police Department of Quincy.

Loving grandfather of Haley Hartnett and David Leuchte, Edward J. “Joe” Hartnett V, Nicole Hartnett, Scott O’Brien and his wife Nichole, twins Maxwell and Matthew Kelly, Chloe Kelly, and Jason Kelly.

Cherished great grandfather of Lena, Remi, Gracie, and Ella.

One of seven siblings, Teddy was the dear brother of Maureen Mulhern of Wakefield and her late husband Jack, Michael Hartnett and his wife Ann of Somerville, Eunice Feliciano and her life partner Dominque Derenne of Weymouth, Ann Arria and her husband Charles of North Reading, Dorothy Randall of Everett, and the late John Hartnett.

Brother-in-law of Thomas P. Keefe and his wife Arlan of Niantic, Conn., the late Elaine Cochrane and her late husband Edward. Teddy is also survived by many nieces, nephews, friends, and their families.

Visiting Hours will be held at the Sweeney Brothers Home for Funerals, 1 Independence Avenue, Quincy, on Sunday, March 2, from 1 – 5 p.m. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Divine Mercy Parish in Saint Mary’s Church, 95 Crescent Street, West Quincy, on Monday, March 3, at 10 a.m. Interment, with military honors, to follow at Cedar Grove Cemetery, Dorchester.

  • As a child going to Charlestown and seeing all the cousins was such a treat, especially on Bunker Hill Day at the end of the school year. Teddy always had a smile and was so welcoming.
