Ellen P. Lyons, age 72

It is with great sadness that the family of Ellen P. (O’Neil) Lyons of Quincy, Massachusetts announces her passing on Sunday, November 24, 2024.

Ellen was born in Boston to Virginia (Toland) and Robert O’Neil. The family moved to the Houghs Neck section of Quincy in 1954 where she attended Quincy schools.

As a teenager, Ellen worked as a baby sitter and continued the family tradition of home delivering newspapers. She worked in the insurance industry for many years before retiring to raise her son, Jared.

Ellen was a devoted mother, guiding her son through his many activities and studies.

She enjoyed trips to Nova Scotia on ‘The Cat’, Foxwoods, and New Port Richey, Florida.

Her house was always open to others for holidays and dinners. When Jared was young, she and George arranged for Santa to visit during their annual Christmas parties. It was a treat for the children and adults, with a lovely dinner to follow.

At the end, Ellen was surrounded by loving family and died peacefully after saying good bye. We will remember her for the laughter she brought to many, her big heart and compassionate understanding.

Ellen is survived by her husband of 51 years, George, retired Federal Police Officer Dept. of Homeland Security Federal Protective Services, her son Jared (wife Rebecca (Johnson) Lyons), brother Robert (wife Sharyn Hayden), brother William (wife Luisa Mandawe), sister-in-law Rosalie (Lane) O’Neil, as well as many loving nieces, nephews, grand nieces, grand nephews, cousins, and dear friends. She was the sister of the late Richard O’Neil and the late Edward O’Neil.

Memorial Visiting Hours will be held at the Sweeney Brothers Home for Funerals, 1 Independence Avenue, Quincy on Friday, December 6, from 4 – 7 p.m. Relatives and friends are invited to attend.

For those who wish, donations in Ellen’s memory may be made to the charity of your choice.
