Eugene M. Tyrrell, M.D.
of Braintree
Eugene M. Tyrrell, M.D., age 96, of Braintree, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his family and loved ones on Friday, October 23, 2026.
Eugene was born in Boston, to the late Thomas and Mary (Byrne) Tyrrell, both of County Roscommon, Ireland. Raised in Milton, Gene was a graduate of Milton High School (1947), Georgetown University (1951), and Tufts University School of Medicine (1955), and served as a physician in the Air Force.
A devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend, Gene was loved by many. At the center of his world was Joan (Curtin) Tyrrell, his beloved wife of 68 years. Together, they built a life filled with love, family, and faith, leaving behind an extraordinary legacy of 11 children, 34 grandchildren, and 6 great-grandchildren.
Gene will be remembered by all who knew him for his kindness, his humility, his gentle humor, and his quiet wisdom. Always ready to meet you with a smile, a kind word, or the perfect book recommendation, Gene saw the best in everyone and left you feeling like a special part of his life.
Dr. Tyrrell was known affectionately by so many and had a long and distinguished medical career, serving for 42 years on the faculty of Quincy and Carney Hospitals and teaching medical students at Tufts. His compassion and generous life in service earned him many professional awards and recognitions, perhaps the most fitting being referred to as the moral compass of the medical staff by his Quincy Hospital colleagues.
A devoted Catholic and active member of St. Clare Parish for decades, Gene was a man of tremendous faith and limitless generosity. He volunteered his medical care to the BC High Jesuit community, serving them for over 25 years, and provided free medical care to countless people for decades.
The warmth and love of the home on Maplewood Terrace was a testament to Gene’s generosity and humor. The door was always open to family and friends from near and far: there was always an extra bed to sleep in, another seat at the dinner table, or time for an impromptu medical visit. He reveled in the chaos and fun of the home, family, and life he and Joan built in Braintree.
Gene had a unique gift for creating a personal connection with each of his many children, grandchildren and extended family and friends, even in the midst of a crowded holiday party, family wedding, or simple Sunday dinner.
To his family, Eugene was their foundation: a steady presence and source of unconditional love and wisdom. His thoughtful, caring and even-handed advice was sought by many. He is a role model and inspiration for his entire family.
Eugene Tyrrell – or Dad, Gramps, or Dr. Tyrrell – was loved and adored by so many. He will be greatly missed and lovingly remembered by his wife Joan, his children Paula O’Hara (Joel), Eugene Tyrrell (Carole), Mark Tyrrell (Jeri), Neil Tyrrell (Kristina Wright), Dana Tyrrell (Michele), Melissa Doyle (Jere), Julie Tuite (Jim), Laurie Tyrrell (Brian Fitzgerald), Kim Tyrrell-Knott (Erik), Tracey Tyrrell Harrah (Andy), and Craig Tyrrell; his grandchildren Sean, Lauren, Daniel, Julianne, Kerri, Sarah, Audrey, Eric, Kevin, Julia, Jenna, Jillian, Michael, Ryan, Lucie, Samuel, Leah, Daniella, Michaela, Kellianne, Kathryn, Jimmy, Owen, Colleen, Cara, Meghan, Tyler, Shea, Makenna, Sophia, Emmett, Juliet, Iris, and Rhys; and great-grandchildren Jack, Ryan, Abby, Evelyn, John, and Riley.
Eugene was also the dear brother of 13 siblings: Dorothea Silk and the late Mary, Kathleen, Thomas (Toss), James, John, Colette, Patricia, Paul, William, Leo, Walter, and Robert. He will also be deeply missed by his many nieces, nephews, and their families.
Visiting Hours will be held at the Sweeney Brothers Home for Funerals, 1 Independence Avenue, Quincy, on Sunday, November 8, from 2 – 5 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated in the Church of Saint Clare, 1244 Liberty Street, Braintree, on Monday, November 9, at 11 a.m. Interment to follow at Blue Hill Cemetery, Braintree. Relatives and friends are invited to attend.
The Tyrrell family kindly suggests in lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in Eugene’s memory to Friends of Thayer Public Library, 798 Washington Street, Braintree, MA 02184 or The Parkinson’s Foundation, 1350 Broadway, Suite 1530, New York, NY 10018.
