Evelyn “Evie” Russell Hackett, age 98

It is with heavy hearts, we share the passing of Evelyn “Evie” Russell Hackett, who left us peacefully on Monday, October 7, 2024, at the age of 98. Born in Boston, MA, and raised in the Savin Hill neighborhood, Evie lived a full and beautiful life, touching everyone around her with her kindness, strength, and unwavering love.

Evie married her soulmate, Joseph Hackett, with whom she shared 60 years of devoted marriage. Together, they raised their family in Quincy, MA, a place close to Evie’s heart. She had a deep love for the beach and the ocean. Evie had a lifelong passion for learning and started to play the piano at age 90, proving that it’s never too late to pick up something new. She was a member of the Red Hat Society, known fondly as the “email female” for her group.

Evie’s Catholic faith was a guiding light throughout her life, bringing her comfort and strength. She often credited her longevity to three key practices: moisturize, exercise, and the Serenity Prayer. She was always eager to grow and explore, earning her associate degree from Quincy College, and working as an administrative assistant before retiring to Lafayette, LA.

Preceded in death by her loving parents, Peter and Molly Russell, her beloved husband Joseph, and her siblings Louise Russell, Edward Russell, Pauline Nugent, and Frances Doyle, Evie leaves behind a family who will forever treasure her memory. She is survived by her daughters, Amy and Betsy Hackett of Lafayette, LA, and her son, David Hackett of Phoenix, AZ, as well as her daughters-in-law Denise Hackett and Elizabeth Mouton. Evie was a proud and devoted grandmother to Alysa, Julia, and Lauren Hackett; Katelyn and Jessica Hackett; and Michael and Evan Darby-Hackett. She also leaves behind many cherished nieces and nephews who held a special place in her heart.

Evie’s warmth, generosity, and love will live on in all who knew her.

Funeral Services will be conducted at Christ Church Episcopal, 12 Quincy Avenue, Quincy, on Saturday, October 12, at 11 a.m. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Visitation prior to the service from 10 – 10:45 a.m. Interment will take place privately.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Evie’s memory may be made to a cause that reflected Evie’s caring spirit and commitment to helping others, Rosie’s Place, P.O. Box 51399, Boston, MA 02205-1399 or www.rosiesplace.org.

  • Our deepest condolences to David,Betsy ,Amy and families at the sad passing of your Mam Evie. Our heartfelt thoughts and prayers are with you all at this very sad time.
We will treasure the memories of the time we shared with her and Joe in Boston and Dublin.

  • Betsy, David, and Amy,
I was so sad to learn of “Missy’s” passing. She was a second mom to the O’Toole “kids”. She was the go-to for fun and always made time for family and friends. I was so impressed with her zest for life for taking aerobics in later years and going to college as an adult. My greatest childhood memories have Missy at the center. She will be missed by all her knew her. Fondly, Moleen.

  • Our deepest sympathy to David,Betsy,Amy,& families on the sad loss of your Mam.Our thoughts and prayers are with you all. May she rest in peace.
