James F. Scanlan III, age 71

James F. Scanlan III, age 71, of Murrells Inlet, S.C., formerly of Braintree, died unexpectedly, Tuesday, October 18, 2022, in the comfort of his loving family.

James was born in Boston, to the late Ruth Ann (Savage) and James F. Scanlan, Jr. He was raised and educated on Long Island, N.Y. Jimmy moved to Braintree at the age of sixteen and graduated from Braintree High School, Class of 1969. He graduated from Northeastern University in 1976.

Following his graduation from Northeastern, he entered the FBI Academy. His first assignment was in the Philadelphia office in 1977. He retired in 2007 as a Supervisory Special Agent in Quantico, Va.

He was a member of the Moose Lodge and the Elks Lodge.

He loved sports, especially football, and was a car and motorcycle enthusiast. He enjoyed relaxing by his pool and spending time with his turtles.

Jimmy was a hard-working man with a heart of gold. Most of all, he loved his family with his whole heart. He will be deeply missed.

Beloved husband for thirty-one years of Robin L. (Feltus) Scanlan.

Devoted father of Jennifer Scanlan of Deptford, N.J., Eric J. Scanlan and his wife Patty of Sicklerville, N.J., John J. Scanlan and his wife Sandra of Fredericksburg, Va., and Marc F. Scanlan of Chesilhurst, N.J. Step-father of Derek Gould and his wife Jennifer, and Allyson Finelsen, all of Sewell, N.J.

Loving grandfather of Nicholas, Brianna, Brooke, Jillian, Kaitlyn, Aidan, Cole, Peyton, Carlee, Taylor, Madison, Dylan, Lucas, Benjamin, and Noah. Cherished great grandfather of Landon.

Dear brother of Patricia M. Canniff of Fla. and her late husband Paul, Paula R. Rizzo and her husband John of Bridgewater, Jean M. Gomez and her husband Peter of N.H., Marie L. Dooley and her husband Thomas of Weymouth.

James is also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and neighbors.

Visiting hours will be held at the Sweeney Brothers Home for Funerals, 1 Independence Avenue, Quincy, on Wednesday, October 26, from 4 – 7 p.m. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Saint Agatha Parish, 432 Adams Street, Milton, on Thursday, October 27, at 10:30 a.m. Interment to follow at Cedar Grove Cemetery, Dorchester.
