James T. Stynes, age 80

James T. Stynes, age 80, of Weymouth, formerly of Hull, died peacefully, Tuesday, December 10, 2024 in the comfort of his home, surrounded by his loving family, after a long, courageous battle with cancer.

James was born in Cambridge, to the late James H. and Doris M. (Halfacer) Stynes. Raised and educated in Somerville and Watertown, he was a graduate of Watertown High School, Class of 1962. Jim lived in Weymouth for many years, previously in Hull for six years. He and his wife, Charlotte, were winter residents of Juno Beach, Fla. and enjoyed their summers in Barnet, Vt. where they made many wonderful friendships.

He was employed as a letter carrier with the U.S. Postal Service for thirty-eight years. He began his career in Boston but most of his service was spent in North Weymouth. He was a member of the National Association of Letter Carriers. After his retirement, Jim worked as a security guard for the Gillette World Shaving Headquarters in South Boston and later as a courier for South Shore Savings Bank.

Active in community affairs, Jim was a member and past president of the North Weymouth Civic Association. As a younger man, he also volunteered as a softball coach for his daughters’ teams.

He was an avid Boston sports fan and was a proud New England Patriots season ticket holder for thirty-three years.

As a man of faith, Jim was a longtime member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Quincy and also attended the Holy Spirit Lutheran Church in Juno Beach, Fla.

Jim and Charlotte enjoyed traveling with family and friends. They had fond memories of their honeymoon to Switzerland, their annual trip to Mattapoisett, and visiting Santa’s Village in the White Mountains with his children, and later his grandchildren. Most recently, Jim was happiest at their cabin on Harvey’s Lake on their pontoon boat listening to the loons.

Jim greeted everyone he met with a warm smile and bright hello. He didn’t shy away from striking up a conversation with a complete stranger. Although his favorite topic was his family, he loved to talk about sports, weather, and politics to all that would listen. Regardless of his many years of health struggles, Jim continued to keep positive and always took time to make people smile. Jim was devoted to his family and especially his children, stepchildren, and grandchildren, supporting all their many activities and accomplishments.

Beloved husband of Charlotte L. (Lowell) Stynes.

Devoted father of Karen Rhodes and her husband Robbie of Kentucky, Lynn Anne Stynes of Weymouth, Jennifer Sweeney and her husband Robert of Braintree, Erik Stynes and his partner Chelsea Barr of Warren, R.I.

Dear brother of Donna Goneau of Beverly and her late partner Joyce Bates, Susan Nardone of Somerville and her late husband Nick, the late Janet Belanger and her surviving husband Kevin of Malden.

Jim is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and their families.

Jim’s family would like to thank the doctors and nurses at Brigham & Women’s Hospital and at McCarthy Care Center in East Sandwich for their compassionate care. Especially Dr. Thomas Clancy and Dr. Christopher Ducko and their teams.
