Janet M. (Sullivan) Donovan, age 90, of Weymouth, formerly of Rockland and Quincy, died suddenly, Thursday, June 18, 2026 at The Current South Shore in Weymouth.
Janet was born in Quincy, to the late Margaret (Templeman) and Russell Sullivan, and was raised by her late grandparents, David and Jesse Templeman. She was a graduate of Quincy High School, Class of 1953, and was proud to have served on her class’s reunion committee for sixty years. She attended Wellesley College where she majored in Social Work.
She lived in Rockland for fifteen years, previously in Quincy for most of her life.
Janet began her career as an office manager for Quincy United Fund. In 1959, Janet married John J. “Jack” Donovan, Jr. She left the workforce and stayed at home for fifteen years, raising two sons. She considered the birth of her sons to be her greatest achievement in life. She especially enjoyed watching them play baseball, football, and basketball, and never missed their games. She returned to work with Chase Manhattan Leasing Division for ten years, and later worked for Deutsche Financial Services in Norwood for ten years.
As a young woman, Janet was active in Quincy Junior Women’s Club, and later in life, with the Braintree Women’s Club.
She was a third-generation family member of Quincy Point Congregational Church and had sung in the choir for many years. She was a former member of the Senior Choral Group of Massasoit Community College and the Braintree Choral Society.
Janet and her late husband, Jack, traveled extensively throughout the United States and London, England, Italy, and the Caribbean islands. For many years, they spent winters in Lauderdale-by-the-Sea, Florida, and Aruba, where they enjoyed many friendships. They were always the first ones on the dance floor and especially enjoyed ballroom dancing.
Janet enjoyed fashion, home decorating, and designing floral arrangements. She had taken university extension courses on floral arranging. She hoped to be remembered for her devotion to her family and friends.
Wife of the late John J. “Jack” Donovan, Jr., Major, Army National Guard of Massachusetts, Retired.
Mother of John K. “Jack” Donovan and his fiancée Joni Carroll of Whitman, and the late Brian D. Donovan.
Sister of the late Nancy Daniels and her late husband Norman.
Sister-in-law of Richard “Dick” Donovan of Braintree and his late wife Carol, Jim Donovan and his wife Eve of Braintree, and the late Janet Volpe and her late husband John.
Cousin of Eddie Mahoney of Plymouth and his late wife Patty and the late Jayne DiMeo and her late husband Fred.
Janet is also survived by many supportive friends for over sixty years, including Peggy Glynn, Frances Rizzo, Catherine “Kitty” Stone, Maureen Brillo, Frank Brillo, Roger Mello, Donna Mello, Evalyn Wong, the late George Wong, the late Dottie Ricciarelli, the late Ronald Ricciarelli, the late Joan Jaehnig, and the late Charlie Jaehnig.
She leaves a legacy of love to her family and friends and will be deeply missed by all.
Memorial Funeral Services will be conducted at the Sweeney Brothers Home for Funerals, 1 Independence Avenue, Quincy, on Thursday, July 9, at 10 a.m. Reverend Kimberly J. Murphy, Pastor, Quincy Point Congregational Church, will officiate. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Memorial Visitation prior to the service from 9 – 10 a.m. Inurnment to follow at Blue Hill Cemetery, Braintree.
