Janice Mariano, age 77

Janice (Kennedy) Mariano, age 77, of Canton, passed unexpectedly, Wednesday, April 16, 2025 after a brief illness. Janice is survived by her loving husband, Peter, of 56 years. Together, they had two children, Dominic Mariano & Pamela (Mariano) Chin and her husband, Matt. She is the daughter of the late Frank & Alice Kennedy. Janice was preceded in death by her loving brother, John Kennedy, and his wife, Sally, and she is the loving “Auntie” of many nieces and nephews.

Janice was a graduate of the former Quincy City Hospital School of Nursing. She worked as a dedicated nurse for over 50 years, serving hospitals and doctors’ offices. Additionally, Janice was Director of Clinical Services and a Northeast Clinical Informational Specialist for Maxim Health Care Services where she is remembered for devoting her clinical knowledge and expertise for the benefit of her patients and staff.

Janice enjoyed knitting, traveling with her husband, attending The Nutcracker with her granddaughters, spending time with friends, listening to il Divo, and playing the occasional slot machine with a vodka soda in hand.

Janice’s biggest joy was being the loving Nonnie of Tatum, Simon, Piper, Luci, and Luke. Home is where she shared her love of cooking and serving enormous holiday meals, passing along her family recipes to her grandchildren to enjoy and share. Janice will be forever remembered for the warmth and love she gave to her friends and family when they came to her home and the children in multiple communities who had the privilege of calling her Nonnie. Her favorite, though, was Tillman the dog.

Visiting Hours will be held at the Sweeney Brothers Home for Funerals, 1 Independence Avenue, Quincy, on Thursday, April 24, from 4 – 7 p.m. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated in Saint John the Baptist Church, 44 School Street, Quincy, on Friday, April 25, at 11 a.m. Interment to follow at the Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne.

The family kindly requests that flowers be omitted. In lieu of flowers, donations in Janice’s memory may be made to the American Cancer Society, 3 Speen Street, Suite 250, Framingham, MA 01701.

  • I am so shocked and saddened to hear about my life-long friend. I have so many wonderful memories we shared. I can’t stop thinking about when we were about 12 years old, walking down Sea Street and a man stopped his car and gave us a PUPPY. Boy, that story could have gone dangerously wrong but it didn’t. In nursing school we spent an evening piercing each others ears.We thought of words of encouragement for Janice to send to her dearest boyfriend who became her loving husband, while he was overseas serving our country. My heart breaks for Peter, and her family. She is going to be so happy to be reunited with Johnny in Heaven. My deepest sympathy to her family. Sincerely, Alice Renner
