John V. Cummings, Capt., Q.F.D., Ret., age 86

John V. Cummings, Captain, Quincy Fire Department, Retired, age 86, of Pembroke, formerly of Braintree then Quincy, died peacefully, Saturday, October 19, 2024 at South Shore Hospital, in the comfort of his loving family.

John was born in Boston to the late Vincent L. and Jean (Savoy) Cummings. Raised in Braintree, he was a graduate of Braintree High School, Class of 1957. He lived in Pembroke for nineteen years also wintering in Englewood, Florida for twenty-two years.

He was proud member of Quincy Fire Department. John was appointed to the department May 2, 1970, promoted to Lieutenant and on April 18, 1991 was promoted to the rank of Captain. During his thirty-three-year career, John was assigned to various stations and apparatus, received several citations, and retired as the Training Officer for new recruits on May 30, 2003.

John was also a well-known self-employed master electrician for many years.

He served in the U.S. Navy in the late 1950’s as a seaman aboard the destroyer, U.S.S. Vogelgesang (DD 862). He then worked on submarines going on sea trials aboard the USS Gato (SSN 615), USS Greenling (SSN 614), USS Whale (SSN 638) and USS Sunfish (SSN 649).

John was a man of strong Christian faith and a longtime member of Calvary Chapel in Rockland, where he used his skills and experience to help during church construction and remodel.

He was an avid golfer and had two holes-in-one to his credit. John enjoyed working around his home, and was always ready to begin a new project.

Most of all, he was devoted to his family, especially his much-loved grandchildren and great grandsons, actively supporting all their many activities and accomplishments.

Beloved husband for sixty-two years of Betty A. (Douglas) Cummings.

Devoted father of Denise M. MacDonald of Marshfield, John D. Cummings and his wife Karen of Hanover. Loving grandfather of Shaun and Shannon MacDonald, Nicole, Emily, and Joshua Cummings. Cherished great grandfather of Tyler and Ryan.

Dear brother of Jeanine Travers of Braintree, June MaGillivray and her husband William of Hingham and James Cummings of Braintree. John is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and their families.

Memorial Services will be conducted at Calvary Chapel, 175 Market Street, Rockland, on Saturday, October 26, at 10 a.m. Pastor Scott Greenberg will officiate. Military honors will follow. Relatives and friends are invited to attend.

In lieu of flowers, donations in John’s memory may be made to Samaritan’s Purse, P.O. Box 3000, Boone, NC 28607-9956 or to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.

    He was a wonderful man who helped so many people in so many ways. He was my husbands officer at Engine 8 for many years. I worked with him when he did work for QCAP doing electrical work.

  • Dear Betty, Denise, John and all family of John V.,
    We are so sorry to hear that our friend John has passed away. We have many fond memories of him, especially during the Winter of 2012 when we spent three months at Wildflower in Englewood , Florida.
    Although John will be missed by all those who love him, we know that John is now in Heaven, worshipping our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. All of us who claim Jesus as ours will not only be reunited with John but we will also spend Eternity with Jesus!
