Joseph J. Mellace, age 82, a longtime resident of Hingham, died suddenly, Tuesday, January 16, 2024 at home.

Joseph was born in Boston, to the late Frank and Edith (MacLennan) Mellace. Raised and educated in Dorchester, he was a graduate of Dorchester High School, Class of 1959. He lived in Hingham for nearly sixty years.

He was proud to have served in the United States Army during the late 1950s and early 1960s.

Joe was formerly employed as a carpenter with his late father’s general contracting business, the former Frank Mellace Company.

He was a former member of the Dorchester Yacht Club.

Beloved husband for fifty-nine years of Eileen A. (McHugh) Mellace.

Devoted father of Lisa Rodrigues of Marshfield, Kim Laughlin and her husband Tom of Acushnet, Arthur Mellace and his wife Susan Codner of Norwell, and Frank Mellace and his partner Mary Burchill of Whitman.

Loving grandfather of Christina Rodrigues, Morgan and Madison Laughlin, Emma and Logan Mellace, and the late Anthony Rodrigues.

Dear brother of Sandra Mellace of Hingham, Frank Mellace and his wife Lynne of Yarmouth, and the late Arthur Mellace and his late wife Sandi.

Joe is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services will be conducted at the Sweeney Brothers Home for Funerals, 1 Independence Avenue, Quincy, on Wednesday, January 24, at 11 a.m. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Visitation prior to the service from 10 – 11 a.m. Interment, with military honors, at the Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne.
