Joseph P. McAlarney, age 93, of Weymouth, died peacefully, Friday, November 6, 2026 at the Barbara & Pat Roche Hospice Home in Hingham, surrounded by his loving family.

Joe was born in Boston, to the late Mary (Fitzgerald) and Joseph McAlarney. Raised and educated in South Boston, he was a graduate of South Boston High School, Class of 1950. He attended Boston College. He lived in Weymouth for fifty-one years, previously in Hyde Park for ten years.

Joe was proud to have served in the United States Army during the Korean conflict. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal.

He worked at the former Boston Edison Company for forty-three years, first as a draftsman and later as a meter reader.

Joe was a motivated and determined individual. He owned and operated a successful floral business for many years. He was passionate about theatre and was a director at the North River Theatre in Norwell.

A dedicated member of Planet Fitness in Weymouth, exercise was an important part of his life. He developed many long-term friendships in his many years as a member.

Beloved husband for sixty-two years of Glenise I. (Higginson) McAlarney of the United Kingdom.

Devoted father of Robert J. McAlarney of Weymouth and Phoenix, Arizona, Susan A. Gerdeman and her husband Rasmus of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Loving grandfather of Solange E. Gerdeman and Odin K. Gerdeman.

The youngest and last of four siblings, he was predeceased by Marian Gibbons, Rita McCarthy, and Edward McAlarney.

Joe is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and their families.

In accordance with Joe’s wishes, funeral services were private.
