Mary Louise Morrissey, age 95

Mary Louise Morrissey, age 95, of Norwell, formerly of Cambridge, passed away peacefully, Tuesday, January 17, 2023, at the Southwood at Norwell Nursing Facility.

She was born in Quincy in 1927 and grew up there. Mary was a graduate of the former Saint John’s School in Quincy and Sacred Heart High School in Weymouth, Class of 1945, where she served as the secretary of her graduating class.

Following graduation, she moved to Cambridge and joined the President’s office at MIT in 1950. She worked her way to becoming the Director of the Institute’s Special Events and Information Center and enjoyed a long and rich career, serving six MIT Presidents. She retired in 1995. She will be remembered for her dedication to the staff, faculty, students and benefactors of MIT and her skill in coordinating and directing many events, new building dedications and commencement ceremonies throughout her career. Mary loved her work and the people with whom she collaborated. It was while at MIT Mary made many dear and lasting friendships.

Mary lived a complete life; intelligent and successful business person, loving daughter, sister and aunt, dear friend and independent senior. Some of her fondest memories were of her travels to her ancestral homelands in both Ferrara, Italy and Ireland, and her annual trips to Martha’s Vineyard, Tanglewood and New York City.

A woman of deep faith, Mary held her traditional Catholic values near and dear to her and enjoyed attending services at St. Paul’s Church in Cambridge. Mary will be missed by her dear friends.

Beloved daughter of the late John J. and Louise M. (Vecchi) Morrissey.

The last of five siblings, she was predeceased by Patricia E. Stenson, John J. Morrissey, William Morrissey, and Natalie Morrissey.

Mary is survived by several nieces and nephews and their families.

At the request of the family, funeral services were private.
