Panfilo Rodolfo “Rudi” Sandonato, age 79

Panfilo Rodolfo “Rudi” Sandonato, age 79, of Braintree, died peacefully, Friday, June 9, 2023 in the comfort of his home, surrounded by his loving family.

Rudi was born in Prezza, Abruzzo, Italy, to the late Pasquale and Elisabetta (Tulliani) Sandonato. Raised and educated there, he immigrated to the United States in 1964 at the age of nineteen, settling in Quincy. He lived in Braintree for the past forty-four years, previously in Weymouth for ten years.

Rudi was the owner and operator of the former Giovanna’s Bakery in Weymouth Landing for fifteen years. He went on to work in the construction industry and had been retired for many years.

Rudi enjoyed tending to his vegetable garden. Most of all, he was a hard-working man who was devoted to his family, actively supporting their many activities and accomplishments.

Beloved husband for fifty-four years of Anna (Crugnale) Sandonato.

Devoted father of Lisa A. Sandonato of Weymouth, Kelly J. Batti and her husband Adriano of Medford, and Marco D. Sandonato, Esq. of Quincy.

Loving grandfather of Giovanna G. Batti and Isabella A. Batti.

Dear brother of Bambina Tulliani of Italy, Leonilda Paolilli of Quincy, and predeceased by Giosue R. Sandonato and Dominic Sandonato.

Rudi is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and their families.

Visiting hours will be held at the Sweeney Brothers Home for Funerals, 1 Independence Avenue, Quincy, on Thursday, June 15, from 4 – 7 p.m. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated in Saint John the Baptist Church, 44 School Street, Quincy, on Friday, June 16, at 10:30 a.m. Entombment to follow at Blue Hill Cemetery, Braintree.

  • i’m so sad I will miss my Godfather very much. He was always happy and inviting to all. His garden was as just as good as my father’s was. I’ll miss his laugh and smile.
