Sandra J. Mattie, age 85

Sandra J. (Furbish) Mattie, age 85, of Quincy, passed away peacefully on Friday, May 16, 2025, surrounded by her loving family.

Born in Gouldsboro, Maine, Sandra was the daughter of the late Delbert and Frances (Woodward) Furbish. She was raised and educated in Quincy, where she attended Quincy High School, later continuing her education at Massasoit Community College.

She worked with the Head Start Program in Brockton and served as a home health aide which led her to establish her own company, SOS Services.

Sandra found deep joy in the company of animals and the beauty of the natural world, especially the rocky shores of Maine where she felt most at peace.

She was a lifelong avid reader with a deep love for poetry, both writing and appreciating it. She also enjoyed watching Jeopardy! and playing Yahtzee, both of which she excelled at. She loved clothes and always wanted to wear her red lipstick and show off her funky purple hair.

Sandra adored her Grandmother, Jenny, with whom she spent many of her childhood summers picking blueberries, going to flea markets, and enjoying lobsters caught by her grandfather, who was a lobster fisherman.

She was a proud mother to Jeannine M. Ayalla and her husband Donald of Attleboro, Michelle A. Fairbanks of Blackstone, Jacquelyn M. Devin and her husband Paul of Milton, and Stephanie J. Brett of Braintree. She was a cherished grandmother to Brittany, Juliet, Isabella, and Sophia; Madeline and Molly; and Aidan.

Sandra is survived by her dear siblings: Lois Martell and her husband Sparky, Lawrence Furbish and his wife Donna, William Furbish and his wife Sue, Norma Gautreau and her husband Bob. She also leaves behind many beloved nieces and nephews.

Sandra was a proud pet grandparent to Nuala, Floki, and Coco. Among her many beloved pets, she shared a special bond with her loyal dog, Zen, who passed before her but remained forever in her heart.

Memorial Visiting Hours will be held on Sunday, June 1, from 2 – 5 p.m., at the Sweeney Brothers Home for Funerals, 1 Independence Avenue, Quincy. Relatives and friends are warmly invited to attend.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Sandra’s memory may be made to MSPCA-Angell, Attn: Donations, 350 South Huntington Avenue, Boston, MA 02130, a local animal shelter, or a wildlife center.
