Thomas R. Holmes, age 71

Thomas R. Holmes, age 71, a longtime resident of Quincy, died peacefully, Sunday, March 30, 2025 at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, surrounded by his loving family.

Thomas was born in Brighton, to the late Marion (Ewell) and George J. Holmes, Detective, Boston Police Dept., who was killed in the line of duty on November 6, 1963 at the age of forty-one. Raised in Dorchester and Quincy, Tom was a graduate of Quincy Vocational Technical School, Class of 1971. He later earned an Associate degree from Massasoit Community College. He lived in Quincy for fifty-seven years.

Tom was a roofer and proud member of Roofers Local 33 for forty-five years. He had been retired for several years.

Tom was a longtime member of the Adams Heights Mens Club of Quincy where he enjoyed many friendships. He volunteered as a Little League coach with Quincy Youth Baseball for thirty-seven years, coaching the Burgin Platner and Company team.

He was an avid sports fan and loved watching games on television. He also enjoyed playing golf, crossword puzzles, and Craigville Beach in Barnstable. He cherished time spent with his granddaughter.

Beloved husband for fifty-one years of Susan E. (Pamplin) Holmes.

Devoted father of the late Duane C. “Dewey” Holmes.

Loving grandfather of Zachary T. Holmes, Nathan T. Holmes, and Neely D. Finney-Holmes.

The last of four siblings, he was predeceased by Ellen T. Reade, George J. Holmes, and Charles F. Holmes.

Brother-in-law of Beverly A. Barrett and her husband J. Christopher, Jane F. Fitzgibbon and her late husband Thomas.

Uncle of Thomas Reade, George Reade, Charles F. Holmes, Jr., and Thomas “T.J.” Fitzgibbon.

Father-in-law of Samantha A. Finney.

Visiting Hours will be held at the Sweeney Brothers Home for Funerals, 1 Independence Avenue, Quincy, on Sunday, April 6, from 2 – 5 p.m. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated in Saint Joseph Church, 550 Washington Street, Quincy, on Monday, April 7, at 10 a.m. Interment to follow at Blue Hill Cemetery, Braintree.

  • SUE, SO SORRY TO HEAR ABOUT TOMMY’S PASSING. TOMMY WAS LIKE A BIG BROTHER FIGURE TO ME. WHEN I FIRST STARTED OUT ROOFING AT 21, TOMMY TOOK ME UNDER HIS WING. AND WITH OUR MUTAL LOVE FOR BRUCE AND THE BAND OUR FRIENDSHIP CONTINUED FOR THE NEXT 40 YEARS. NOW AT 61, I JUST WANTED TO SAY, TOMMY WAS TRULY SPECIAL PERSON WHO TOUCHED THE LIVES OF EVERYONE AROUND HIM. HIS KINDNESS, LAUGHTER, AND UNWAVERING SUPPORT WILL BE GREATLY MISSED.   • So many memories of Tom and you since high school. Most boys we knew drove heaps or their parents old cars, but not Tom. He had his Chevelle (if my memory is still working). You and Tom lead the way to getting married and then starting the year of the boys in 1975. Tom will always be remembered as a good guy. RIP
