William J. “Bill” Trifone, age 92

William Joseph “Bill” Trifone, age 92, a lifelong resident of Quincy, died peacefully, Thursday, August 22, 2024 in the comfort of his home, surrounded by his loving family.

William was born in Quincy, to the late Nicola and Anina “Annie” (DiNicoloantonio) Trifone. Raised and educated there, he was a graduate of Quincy High School, Class of 1949. He was also a graduate of Boston University, Class of 1956. In 1963, Bill earned his Master’s degree in Education from Harvard University.

He was employed as a hospital administrator for the former Mass Osteopathic Hospital in Boston from 1983 to his retirement in 1989, and previously served as assistant administrator for seven years.

Bill began his distinguished career as a Social Studies teacher for the Quincy Public Schools from 1956 through 1972, assigned to Broad Meadows Middle School and later at North Quincy High School.

He was proud to have served in the United States Air Force as a Corporal during the Korean conflict.

Active in community affairs, Bill was instrumental in founding the Neighborhood Youth Corps and the first Work Study Program in Quincy.

On November 24, 1964, during the administration of Mayor Amelio DellaChiesa, Bill was appointed chairman of the newly formed “Local Community Action Organization”. This resulted in him writing and applying for a Federal Grant which, when approved, developed into Quincy Community Action Programs. As a founding member, Bill became the first President of QCAP’s Board of Directors.

He was active with the Quincy Cerebral Palsy Association for many years and served as President for eleven years. He was also a trustee of the University of New England for nine years.

As a man of faith, Bill was a lifelong parishioner of Saint John the Baptist Church in Quincy, where he served as an usher and made many friendships.

Always wanting to stay active, he enjoyed bowling, golf, tennis, and playing cribbage. Bill was an avid lifelong New York Yankees fan. After retirement, he taught at Quincy College and was a substitute teacher for the Quincy Public Schools. He also took great pride in assisting his daughters, Christina and Lisa, with their candy store, Purefections, and his son, Bill Jr.’s interior design and Hancock Appliance ventures.

Most of all, Bill was devoted to his family, especially his grandchildren and great granddaughters, supporting all their many activities and accomplishments.

Beloved husband for sixty-eight years of Geraldine M. (Oliva) Trifone.

Devoted father of Jean Marie Racicot of Quincy, Nancy Ann Trifone Seales and her husband Timothy of Easton, William Joseph Trifone, Jr. and his spouse Steven Masker, John Pasquale Trifone, all of Quincy, Carol L. Upson of Marshfield, Lisa T. Trifone, Robert Vincent Trifone, Christina Trifone Bartkus and her husband Steven, all of Quincy.

Loving grandfather of Michael J. Racicot and his wife Teresa, Richard M. Upson III and his wife Heather, and Matthew Trifone Bartkus.

Cherished great grandfather of Emma and Stella.

The last of four siblings, he was predeceased by Pasquale J. “Pat” Trifone, Ena DiSalvio, and Nicholas V. Trifone.

Bill is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and their families.

Visiting hours will be held in Saint Joseph Church, 550 Washington Street, Quincy, on Thursday, August 29, from 4 – 7 p.m. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated in Saint John the Baptist Church, 44 School Street, Quincy, on Friday, August 30, at 10 a.m. Interment, with military honors, to follow at Mount Wollaston Cemetery, Quincy.
