William J. Cosgrove, Jr., age 87, of Weymouth, formerly of Quincy, died peacefully, Wednesday, August 12, 2026 at South Shore Hospital in Weymouth, surrounded by his loving family.

Bill was born in Malden, to the late Doris R. (Olson) and William J. Cosgrove, Sr. Raised and educated in Dorchester, he was a graduate of Dorchester High School, Class of 1957. He lived in Weymouth for seven years, previously in Quincy for most of his life.

Bill was proud to have served in the United States Air Force Reserve during the early 1960s.

He worked as a heavy machinery operator, primarily as a backhoe operator, for the former Commonwealth Gas Company in Cambridge for over thirty years. Bill was also a longtime member of the United Steelworkers Local 12004.

He was an avid New England Sports fan and enjoyed supporting the local teams.

Beloved husband for fifty-four years of Nora A. (Malloy) Cosgrove.

Devoted father of Elizabeth D. Souza and her husband Edward of Pelham, N.H., and William J. Cosgrove III of Nashua, N.H.

Loving grandfather of Nathan Souza and Kaitlin Souza.

Dear brother of Doris Gigante and her late husband Dino, Raymond Cosgrove, and the late Albert C. Cosgrove and his late wife Janice.

Bill is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and their families.

Funeral Services will be conducted at the Sweeney Brothers Home for Funerals, 1 Independence Avenue, Quincy, on Tuesday, August 18, at 11 a.m., with military honors to follow. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Visitation prior to the service from 10 – 11 a.m. Cremation to follow.
